Windows Embedded XP (XPe) is a componentised version of Windows XP based on the Windows XP Professional binaries. XPe is not related to Windows CE they each target different devices and each have their own benefits. Target analyzer tool quickly generates an operating system configuration based on the hardware of the system selecting from over 10000 individual components.

XPe provides the latest multimedia and web browsing capabilities and contains more extensive device support than Windows CE. Windows XP Embedded is suitable for full featured, connected devices such as thin clients, point-of-sale terminals and advanced set-top boxes, Test and Measurement, Kiosk, Home Media Gateway, gaming and Medical Systems.

Time-to-market can be reduced by using Windows XP Embedded for a number of reasons;

• The hardware requirements can be fulfilled by standard PC hardware or small form factor X86 platforms.
• A test system can be developed based on normal PC hardware before the dedicated hardware is ready.
• Microsoft Visual Studio .NET with the .NET Framework can be used for rapid application development.
