Windows CE is a modular/componentised operating system
that is the basis of Windows Mobile platforms. Or, more precisely Windows Mobile
platforms are a subset of modules derived from the Windows CE platform, with
supplementary customisations for mobile devices. The Windows Mobile title includes a
number of different operating systems targeted at specific product types such as
PocketPC, SmartPhone, Windows Mobile 2003, Windows Mobile 5.0 and the recently launch
Windows Mobile 6.0.
Windows Mobile applications can be developed using Microsoft Visual Studio .NET with the .NET
Compact Framework (2.0 & 3.5).
Driver development for Windows Mobile entails interacting with the underlying Windows CE
operating system requiring , meaning Visual Studio .NET is not suitable for this purpose.
