Raycomm are a UK based, custom software and electronics design and development service
company creating bespoke electronic products, mobile device software applications, backend
web server software and e-commerce database software.
An operating system designed from the ground up for the embedded marketplace. Windows CE is
optimised for devices that have minimal storage. It is a real-time operating system with
deterministic interrupt latency. It has evolved over the years into a component-based,
embedded, real-time operating system. Many platforms are based on the core Windows CE
operating system and it is no longer only targeted at hand-held computers. The componentised
features can provide multimedia and web browsing with support for extensive networking and
Windows CE is typically used in devices that have a specific purpose; they are usually
disconnected from other computers and require a small deterministic OS. Examples include
industrial controllers, communications hubs, point of sale terminals, cameras, Internet
appliances and interactive televisions. Windows CE is currently at version 6.0.
Windows CE is not only supported on Intel x86 processors but can be used on a large
range of processors including MIPs, ARM and Renesas SuperH. Creating an image for any given
piece of hardware requires the use of Platform Builder which allows the selection of
features to include in the image. Applications can be developed to run on boot up or be
selected by the user using a number of development tools including Microsoft Visual Studio
.NET with the .NET Compact Framework.
